Throughout the funeral, he maintains the proper behavior demanded by his vestments. He accompanies family and friends in their grief. His gestures and actions comfort the mourners. He leads the prayers and also the rosary. He yields to the pleas of the bereaved, and he speaks the words to commend the deceased's soul to divine mercy; it is impossible to refuse, he is devoted to his faithful, to his community. With faith in his creed, he asks for help from the Almighty, the undisputed owner of the word, and becomes an instrument of His generous kindness. His words of compassion are profound in the face of an act of extreme violence that offends the Church and is designated as sin. In his prayer, he reminds those present that only God knows the state of spiritual disturbance that drove one of His servants to leave this world by his hand. In a measured voice, he repeats the teachings of the Catechism and quotes from memory: "serious psychological disturbances, deep anguish, obscure fears, can diminish the responsibility of the suicide." He ends by absolving the suicide of sins, and we accept the terrible decision of an act that confronts sacred teachings.
He receives a severe reprimand from his Religious Order; his superiors consider that he has been excessively indulgent toward a mortal sin. He is immediately removed from his pastoral responsibilities, and with legitimate Christian humility, with stoicism, he accepts seclusion in a monastery under the rigor of silence and assumes, with the courage of a servant of God committed to His teachings, this other crucifixion.
